Scales and Harmony: Major and Minor

A foundational course on building major and minor scales and the harmony that grows out of them.

This course covers the building blocks of Western tonal music: how major and minor scales are constructed, how chords are built from those scales, and how those chords function together as harmony. By the end, you will be able to construct any major or minor scale, build triads and seventh chords from scratch, and understand the basic harmonic functions (tonic, subdominant, dominant) that drive chord progressions.

What's covered

  1. Building the Major Scale
  2. Relative and Parallel Minor
  3. Triads: Building Chords from Scales
  4. Harmonic Function: Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant
